Professor Péter Hegyi is a clinician-scientist internationally recognized for his discoveries in pancreatic physiology and translational pancreatology. His pioneering work revealed the critical role of ductal bicarbonate secretion and CFTR function in maintaining pancreatic health and preventing pancreatitis. He has successfully translated his laboratory findings into clinical trials, bridging fundamental mechanisms with patient care.
As Director of the National Academy of Scientist Education (NASE), he founded Europe’s largest talent development network, connecting high-school, university, and PhD education to clinical and translational research. Under his leadership, NASE engages thousands of students annually and serves as a model for European science education.
Professor Hegyi also leads major European collaborations in acute pancreatitis, diabetes, and cystic diseases of the pancreas, promoting evidence-based medicine and open science. His achievements have been recognized by multiple international awards, including the 2025 Pitts Award, one of physiology’s highest distinctions.
